HST/FOS Time-resolved spectral mapping of IP Pegasi at the end of an outburst

چکیده
We report an eclipse mapping analysis of time-resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy covering three eclipses of the dwarf nova IP Pegasi on the late decline of the 1993 May outburst. The eclipse maps of the first run show evidence of one spiral arm, suggesting that spiral structures may still be present in the accretion disc 9 days after the onset of the outburst. In the spatially resolved spectra the most prominent lines appear in emission at any radius, being stronger in the inner disc regions. The spectrum of the gas stream is clearly distinct from the disc spectrum in the intermediate and outer disc regions, suggesting the occurrence of gas stream overflow. The full width half maximum of C IV is approximately constant with radius, in contrast to the expected v ∝ R−1/2 law for a gas in Keplerian orbits. This line probably originates in a vertically extended region (chromosphere + disc wind). The uneclipsed component contributes ∼ 4 % of the flux in C IV in the first run, and becomes negligible in the remaining runs. We fit stellar atmosphere models to the spatially resolved spectra. The radial run of the disc color temperature for the three runs is flatter than the expected T ∝ R−3/4 law for steady-state optically thick discs models, with T ≃ 20000 K in the inner regions and T ≃ 9000 K in the outer disc regions. The solid angles that result from the fits are smaller than expected from the parameters of the system. The radial run of the solid angle suggests that the disc is flared in outburst, and decreases in thickness toward the end of the outburst.

HST/FOS Eclipse mapping of IP Pegasi in outburst
IP Pegasi is a deeply eclipsing dwarf nova (Porb = 3.8 hr) which shows 1-2 weeks-long, ≃ 2 mag outbursts every 60120 days. During outbursts, tidally induced spiral shocks form in its accretion disc as the disc expands and its outer parts feel more effectively the gravitational attraction of the companion star (Steeghs, Harlaftis & Horne 1997). Here we present the first results of a time-resolve...
متن کاملSimulations of spiral structure in the accretion disc of IP Pegasi during outburst
We consider the implications of the detection of spiral structure in the accretion disc of the binary IP Pegasi. We use numerical simulations of the development of a disc outburst to construct predicted Doppler tomograms, which are found to be in close agreement with the observations if the spiral pattern arises as a transient feature when the disc expands viscously at the start of the outburst...
متن کاملGiant outburst of EXO 2030+375: pulse-phase resolved analysis of INTEGRAL data
In June–September 2006 the Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 experienced the second giant outburst since its discovery. The source was shown to have a complicated pulse-averaged X-ray spectral continuum with possible evidence of cyclotron absorption features. In this paper we present the first pulse-phase resolved analysis of the broad band X-ray spectra of EXO 2030+375 obtained with the INTEGRAL ob...
متن کاملSpiral Structure in Ip Pegasi; How Persistent Is It?
Figure 4. Trailed spectrograms (top panels), Doppler maps (middle panels) and computed data (bottom panels) are plotted for Hβ, He ii λ4686Å, and He i λ4472Å for both nights. The computed data were reconstructed from the Doppler maps. The letters A, B and C mark flares visible in both Hβ and He ii λ4686Å; these lead to some artifacts (diagonal stripes) in the maps. ABSTRACT We present spectrosc...
متن کاملSpirals in the disk of EX Dra
Observations at high spectral and temporal resolution are presented of the dwarf nova EX Dra in outburst. The Doppler maps are very similar to those of IP Peg in outburst as observed by Steeghs et al. (1997) and are interpreted as evidence for the presence of spiral shocks. The eclipse as seen in the red continuum indicates a disk radius of 0.31 times the orbital separation. The eclipse in the ...
